A talk with Dr Space from Øresund Space Collective———- 15/10/2024

MM: Can you tell us about your Band and whos your biggest influences?
Dr Space- Øresund Space Collective are a totally improvised space rock band originating in
Copenhagen and Malmo, Sweden. We have been playing since 2004 and have released 44
albums. As for our biggest influences I would say bands like Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Grateful
Dead, Amon Duul II, CAN, and bands that did a lot of spacing out and improvisation in their
music.

MM: Where do you draw your inspirations and ideas from
Dr Space- The world around me but mostly the musicians I am playing with in the room. They
are the biggest inspiration as to what kind of music and what direction the music we will make
will go..

MM: What would you say is your Bands favourite song ?
Dr Space- That is very difficult to say as we have something like 800 songs!!! Our most
popular album is called The Black Tomato from 2007. On Spotify (which I hate), I teleported to
Acapulco has been played the most, by far, from our album, Slip into the Vortex.

MM: Plans tour and festival wise for 2025
Dr Space- ØSC, we will play a 20th anniversary concert in Copenhagen, Denmark April
11-12th, 2025. It is going to be a very special night with lots of musicians (at least 15 different)
playing over the 2 nights and we will play 4 sets of music. Also, we will play the Spaceboat in
Hamburg Germany May 23-24th, our 10th time.. We hope to have a tour in Sept and play in
Italy for the first time ever. Lots happening next year.

MM: What can we expect from Øresund Space Collective live
Dr Space- We play totally improvised music so every time we step on the stage the show is
different. So, no one, even the band, knows what to expect but for sure it will be energetic,
spaced out and psychedelic. People will be dancing and smiling...

MM: What do you like best and worst about touring
Dr Space- The best is playing for the people and making people so happy. We also are excited
to see what music we are going to make. It is one of the most thrilling things to play for people,
a high like nothing else when they are totally into it and enjoy the musical journey. The worst
part is the flights, the delays, the hassles and the low pay..

MM: Which three Bands would be your ultimate touring buddies
Dr Space- Well, we did 2 amazing tours with the Norwegian band, Black Moon Circle (who I
used to play with) so why not another!!! I think the Norwegian band, Motorpsycho could be
really cool and we could all jam together as well.. Finally, I would say one of US jam bands, it
could be PHSIH, Widespead Panic, Dead and Co... I think this fan base would really dig what
we are doing..

MM: What's the most memorable concert you've been to (other than your own) and why
Dr Space- That is a very difficult thing to answer. I have seen so many amazing concerts
over the last 40 years. Allman Brothers at Great Woods 1995 is one though. We saw them
twice in one week and this night Dicky Betts was one fire and the jams were just insane. It
was a mindblowing night of southern rock jamming..

MM: What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment so far with music?
Dr Space- With what?? On a personal level, obtaining my PhD and working at the Harvard
Medical school and having a great career in science. I am very proud of that. On a music level,
I would say the biggest accomplishment is to have been successful in pulling together
musicians like Hasse Horrigmoe (Tangle Edge), Jonathan Segel (Camper van Beethoven),
Mattias Olssen (Ånglagård, Molesome), musicians that I hold in extremely high esteem. These
are just the most amazing musicians and the fact that they play with my band, makes me so
happy. We have made some incredible albums.

MM: Which are your Two favourite Albums of all time
Dr Space- Black Sabbath- Master of Reality and Hawkwind Warrior on the Edge of Time. That
is a very hard question..

MM: Can you remember the first time you ever played live and how it felt to have people
watching you?
Dr Space- YES.. the first time I played live I was playing guest synthesizer with my friend
Juha ́s band, Pseudo Sun (from Sweden). We were playing a Hawkwind and friends festival in
Hamburg. It was cold for June which surprised me but it was really fun... None in the
audience knew who I was most likely except that I had come to the festival the year before.

MM: Growing up which Bands posters did you have on your bedroom wall.
Dr Space- Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Motorhead.. I also painted rock
logos directly on the walls of my bedroom (see picture).

MM - Who do you think influenced the world of Metal / Rock more than any other
person?

Dr Space- NO doubt Tony Iommi is the most influential. Heavy metal, death metal, doom
metal, extreme metal, all would not be the same without early Black Sabbath music. Jimi
Hendrix revolutionised lead guitar playing but not in the same way as Tony was important.

MM - What's the most important thing to the band right now?
Dr Space- Continuing to evolve and create new and exciting new music and try not to repeat
what we have done in the past.

MM:If you could do a cover of any song which one would it be and why?
Dr Space- I would like for us to do Magnu or Opa Loka by Hawkwind from the Warriors on the
Edge of Time album... or maybe both, just run them together.. Why?? I think we could do
them real justice and take them to a new level in the space out parts..

MM: Tell us why we should buy and listen to your Band
Dr Space- I think we are pretty unique as all of our music is improvised and does not follow
any expected pattern. The songs are long and instrumental and take you on journey if you are
open to relax and get into the music. Give us a try.. We have a huge range of music from
heavy stoner space rock like the Black Tomato to BONG inspired doom with Ode to a Black
Hole, world inspired music with sitar (Good planets are hard to find, Different Creatures,
Hallucinations inside the Oracle), Prog rock with Orgone Unicorn, Carnival in Portugal... I do
not think there is another band that has made such a variety of music.

MM: Four words to describe (Øresund Space Collective)
Improvised Psychedelic Space Rock.
