Edens Curse
Ivory Blacks Glasgow 19th May 2014
Having been to a fair few gigs in the great city of Glasgow, this was our first time in Ivory Blacks, the venue is in a great spot right by Glasgow Central station, and it filled up nicely as Fahran opened up for what was promised to be, and indeed was a great night of Hard Rock. Just as they took the stage we had to go downstairs to interview Eden's Curse, but chatting to people around the place, who witnessed these energetic rockers they were mightily impressed. Fahran won a lot of new fans from their performance.
I first had the pleasure of catching Estrella a while ago supporting The Burning Crows and on that night I was blown away and totally hooked. This time a few years down the line Estrella have developed into an even more amazing and enthralling band, I mean these highlanders know how to Party with a capital P!
Opening with 'Shout' the enigmatic frontman Paul Gunn gets everyone’s attention and the place is jumping. I try not to make too many comparisons but this frontman has the vibe and intensity to become a true legendary frontman and as someone remarked, he’s in the mould of Dave Lee Roth and I can’t disagree with that statement.
The set consisted of tracks from the debut album and with crowd pleasers like 'Come Out To Play', 'One Love' and 'Whatever It Is', the band had the whole room in their grasp, dancing and singing along to catchy anthems that rock. They get into your head and make you want move, head-bang and sing into the night.
There’s guitarmanship and trickery from Luke Gunn during the bands set that leaves you open mouthed and thinking is this guy the new Angus Young / Eddie Van Halen! I kid you not, this lad is an accomplished lead guitar player and knows how to shred those strings! Leo McPherson on drums is like a Tasmanian devil as he smashes his kit and thunders along. This was one hell of a set, Nathan Gunn's thumping bass combined with his brother’s talents and McPhersons skills will see this band go even further.
The final song is 'Party', the bands anthem. It's a huge number that has the place bouncing. This was a spell-binding and totally superb set, it’s been to long since I last saw them! I for one won’t leave it so long next time. Estrellas pedigree and reputation is growing with their fan base increasing rapidly! Having supported Robin Beck and The House of Lords recently in and around Europe. Catch these guys live soon and if you don’t have the debut album go and get a hold of it now! Estrella deserve all the accolades and should be massive!
Now for the headliners Eden Curse, playing a variety of tracks from their career and the excellent new album 'Symphony of Sin', this was the first date of the tour starting in Eden's Curse founding member Paul Logue's home town of Glasgow. This always promised to be something special and it really was a perfect end to a night of hard rocking heaven.
Eden's Curse played the crowds favourites such as 'Trinity' and 'Angels and Demons' and a lot of tracks of the new album, which all went down really well and have been accepted by the Curses faithful fans, as well as the new singer. Let's hope Eden's Curse can now stay a settled unit and make even bigger waves in the melodic power metal world!
